In June of 2016 I published an article in Healthcare Marketing Report titled “The Expanded Role of the Healthcare Marketer.” It discusses the changes that will take place within healthcare marketing departments as our organizations move from a fee for service model to a value model. As our organizations transform, so must the marketing function. Here’s a brief video where I speak to that opportunity.

Laura Pierce (Manager, Public Affairs and Communications, Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children) and I will be co-presenting tomorrow afternoon at the AAMC Professional Development Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Cynthia Manley, of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, will be the facilitator for our session.

Here’s an excerpt from the conference brochure with a description of our presentation and some of the learning objectives:

I first presented at the AAMC Professional Development Conference in 2006 with my then client and friend, Suzanne Herman of UNC Health Care. At that time, we shared our notion of branded service line marketing. I am thrilled that both Suzanne and I will be presenting at this year’s conference, although not as co-presenters. Suzanne will be presenting on sharing physician reputation scores by publishing satisfaction ratings on the hospital website. (For those who don’t know it, Google loves star rating systems!) This is an incredibly hot topic and I can’t wait to see her presentation. She is co-presenting with Chrissy Daniels of University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics. They present today (Thursday) at 8:30am. See their presentation description below.

If all goes according to plan, I’ll be blogging and Tweeting from the event. I hope to see you at the conference! If not, I’ll share what I can via social media.

Screen Shot 2016-01-15 at 3.14.50 PMFor weeks now I’ve been meaning to write a blog post about a common use of language that drives me crazy. I’ve noticed that it has become commonplace for people to say “every single day” or “every single time” rather than “every day” or “every time.” I hear it every SINGLE day and it is annoying. The people uttering this phrase are my friends, colleagues and associates – smart people I respect. I would be a happier person if I could simply rise above my frustration, but I just don’t have it in me.

Screen Shot 2016-01-15 at 5.23.25 PMInserting the word “single” does nothing to improve the communication or refine the point being made. Every day means EVERY day. That’s fairly precise. “Single” is just an extra word. Redundant. Unnecessary. I’m sure there’s someone out there who will argue that the word “single” adds punch to the expression. I disagree. All it adds is an extra word with two syllables. It actually slows you down.

As you can tell from the images above, this problem extends beyond common speech. The phrase is on Nike packaging (and ads), T-shirts, posters and book covers. I’m exhausted just thinking about it.

My fear is that this “every single day” trend will soon rival the now all-too-common practice of using the word “so” to start every sentence. Have you noticed that one?

What drives you crazy (other than obnoxious blog posts)? Please share.

Screen Shot 2015-03-12 at 9.33.01 AMYesterday, Dan Hinmon and I held the latest in our series of webinars about the importance of online patient communities within healthcare. Our general perspective is that healthcare communicators and marketers need to become community builders. The notion of “community building” should permeate everything we do.

Here’s the video of Dan’s presentation. I was honored to once again serve as the host and moderator. The subject of Dan’s presentation was: People to People: Improve health, build loyalty, and personalize your marketing with online patient communities.

By watching the video, you’ll learn how online patient communities connect people with people AND with your hospital to improve outcomes, reduce costs, increase patient satisfaction, and build loyalty.

In this webinar Dan Hinmon, president of Hive Strategies, shares:

  • Examples of successful online patient communities
  • Techniques you can use to promote people-to-people interactions
  • 3 ways online communities can improve patient engagement
  • 5 things you must know before you start an online community

My good friends and helper monkeys at WordPress.com prepared a 2014 annual report for my blog. I always find it interesting to look back at the year that was. It is also important to acknowledge the people who have traveled the path with me for the last year and perhaps even longer. For those of you who occasionally read the blog, you have my thanks. I hope we each have a productive and peaceful New Year.

Here’s an excerpt:

Madison Square Garden can seat 20,000 people for a concert. This blog was viewed about 61,000 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Madison Square Garden, it would take about 3 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Screen Shot 2014-05-08 at 2.35.27 PMToday I’m attending and speaking at the PRSA Health Academy in Washington, DC. It is the second time in two weeks that David Meerman Scott and I are on the same slate of speakers. It’s pretty cool to be in his company. We had a chance to connect in Orlando last week prior to his keynote at the Healthcare Marketing and Physician Strategies Summit. Judy Neiman of the Healthcare Strategy Institute introduced us. His presentation was extraordinary, so the folks at #PRSAHealth are in for a treat. He’ll be doing the keynote tomorrow morning so I should be able to attend.

Screen Shot 2014-05-08 at 2.46.05 PMI present at 10:45am, together with Marie Gross, VP Business Development, Signature Healthcare. The title of our presentation is: “Once Upon a Niche: Using Storytelling to Build Online Health Care Communities.” Among other things (it will be an action packed presentation) we will share some of the initiatives Signature Healthcare has launched to engage niche audiences (Physicians, Patients, Community Members, etc.).

If you’re not familiar with PRSA Health Academy, the conference helps health care communicators sharpen their competitive edge by providing insights into emerging industry trends, tools and techniques. And I am fortunate to be presenting at the Academy for the second year in a row. If you’re in attendance, please come up and say hello!

I take photos everywhere I go. Then I post some of them on Instagram and Facebook (via Instagram). I find it interesting to look back at the last several months of client and conference travel by scanning the photos I’ve taken along the way. In many ways, the photos tell the story – a story of hard work, long days on the road, brief respites in local taverns and the occasional good meal with friends. One thing I learned very early in my career about business travel is the value of getting out of the hotel room, avoiding room service and experiencing the local culture. When I’m traveling, no matter how tired I am, I try to connect with friends and take in the flavors of the city; it makes nights in hotels and the time away from family more tolerable.
