Last Friday, we held our second annual Western New England Healthcare Marketing Symposium. This was a one day conference in a region of New England that does not typically play host to this type of professional development event. Once again, the Symposium was a great success. It was wonderful to participate in a full day of learning and networking with peers from across New England. We had marketing professionals from as far away as Portland, Maine, drive to western Massachusetts to attend the event.

Another measure of success was the Twitter activity for this year’s Symposium (using the #HCMSymposium hashtag). As you can see from the analytics below (supplied by Symplur), this year’s Twitter activity more than doubled that of the prior year. I also have data below on the top influencers for the 2017 conference.

If you’re on Twitter tomorrow, my team and I, along with many others, will be Tweeting from the Western New England Healthcare Marketing Symposium in Northampton, Massachusetts. The hashtag for the event is #HCMSymposium; please follow along. If you’re in New England, please consider joining us. With our expanded space this year, the event has not yet sold out!

At 9:30am Eastern, I’ll be sharing my vision for how hospitals and health systems should integrate digital communication tools into physician relations programs. I’ll review case studies from Tufts Medical Center, Cooper University Health Care, and MD Anderson Cancer Center. Each of these organizations used a unique blend of tactics to engage referring physicians through the use of digital tools and platforms. Interestingly, the approaches varied significantly and there are things to learn from each example. As always, I’ll share the good, the bad and the ugly.

The speakers for the event are all top notch and I love the range of topics we’ll be covering – from physician relations to persona development to brand journalism to content marketing with video. Here are the final Twitter analytics for the two full days of the 2016 Connected Health Symposium, as reported by Symplur. In total, 785 people Tweeted over the two days using the conference hashtag (#cHealth16). There were 3,126 Tweets which amounted to an average of 65 Tweets per hour. Of course, the actual Twitter activity was concentrated during the hours that the conference was open. The total number of potential impressions generated over the two days was 19,211,389. Very respectable numbers.

Below you’ll find the analytics from Symplur as well as data on the top influencers on Twitter during the Symposium. I learned a great deal at the conference and had a great time Tweeting (and Retweeting) with these influencers. It was an honor to take part in the conference.

#SHSMD16 Attendees Participating in the #HCLDR Twitter Chat from Eataly Chicago on Tuesday Night

We have once again wrapped up another successful annual conference of the Society for Healthcare Strategy & Market Development. My thanks to the staff at SHSMD and the volunteers who worked so hard to make this event a success. For me, Ann Compton and Don Berwick were the stars of the show. Their keynote presentations were right on point. Lunch at Giordano’s was definitely another highlight! Finally, sitting in on the #HCLDR Twitter Chat on Tuesday night from SHSMD’s event at Eataly Chicago was an unexpected treat. It was so cool to have seven SHSMD attendees sitting around a large table and participating in the chat. For several of them, this was their first Twitter chat of any type. I really got a kick out of that!

Things slowed down a bit on Twitter at Day Three of the Annual Conference of the Society for Healthcare Strategy & Market Development of the American Hospital Association (#SHSMD16).  Impressions were down by more than 1 million compared to the prior day’s total, and Tweets were down as well. Interestingly, we had more people Tweeting on Day 3 than on Day 2.

Day Two at #SHSMD16 turned out to be a busy day on Twitter for conference attendees. The group logged over 2,100 Tweets for a potential 5,450,398 impressions. In all, 410 individuals Tweeted using the conference hashtag. That is data for one day only – September 12, 2016. (Data courtesy of Symplur.)

To get a sense of Twitter adoption and use by healthcare marketing professionals, at the 2014 SHSMD Conference (all three days combined) 412 unique individuals Tweeted at total of 2,286 Tweets for a potential 2,996,564 potential impressions on Twitter. That’s over three days. It’s an interesting comparison.
