A Message From “Master J” for NESHCo Members and New England Healthcare Marketers

(In late May 2019, Jared Johnson will deliver one of the keynotes at the annual conference of the New England Society for Healthcare Communications (NESHCo). What follows is a message from Jared to all potential conference attendees. I am happy to share Jared’s message within my blog. Please read on.)

Dear NESHCo community,

I’m looking forward to joining you at the annual spring conference in May, and not just because I’ll be escaping the Arizona heat! One of my favorite things to do is to get to know fellow healthcare marketers and communicators around the country. We share many challenges. Being in marketing these days is kind of like trying to refabricate a Toyota into a Tesla … while driving it at Ludicrous Speed! And there are no lane markers. And the road keeps changing directions. And the Tesla’s on fire.

This is not an easy field, is it?! Career paths are more unclear, and expectations higher than they have ever been. We are expected to be the best in class – in every class. We’re expected to be world-class storytellers at the same time that we’re data scientists, social advocates, media producers, strategists, IT technicians and customer service reps. Deep down, we might wonder how to keep up with it all.

And yet, this can be one of the most rewarding fields if we are able to align our work with the mission of our organizations. Who else has the potential to improve the quality of life of so many people? Who else has the potential to make healthcare less scary, more accessible, more convenient, and more human for patients?

My session at the conference will be a reminder that it is indeed possible to grow and evolve our skill sets, have fulfilling careers, and succeed in the Digital Age. We will be discussing how to succeed today by pivoting our focus away from mere brand awareness to brand relevance and trust. We’ll be talking about deeper skill sets in digital content strategy, creation, and measurement, shifting away from mass advertising to digital targeting and personalization, listening to our audiences, and developing digital soft skills.

Here’s where I need your help. In order to “NESHCO-ize” the session, I’d like to request that you send me a couple of things in advance:

  1. Your specific questions about skill sets you need in order to succeed
  2. The name of a NESHCo member you’d like me to mention by name in a special “NESHCo Rap” musical performance along with something cool about them (for instance, you can ask me to mention Dan Dunlop, and one of his cats is named Batman)

Send your responses by LinkedIn, Twitter, or email to

It’s time to throw out the old marketing playbook and pivot your personal skill set. Let’s have some fun while doing it.

I can’t wait to meet you!

-Jared Johnson, a.k.a. Master J
