Rural Healthcare Wow!

Stand Up For Eastern North Carolina #standupforENC

I rarely write about healthcare or politics in North Carolina, despite the fact that Jennings (my company) is based there. Today, health systems in NC are being threatened by a new initiative by the State Treasurer. Using an example that is close to me, his proposal could mean a $40 million reduction in reimbursement for Vidant Health – an organization we have worked with for the last 12 years. This is an organization that serves rural, eastern North Carolina. As Vidant’s CEO, Michael Waldrum, MD, has pointed out repeatedly, the Treasurer’s proposal would be detrimental to the health and well-being of the citizens of eastern North Carolina. It would limit Vidant’s ability to provide services to the people of this region.

Politics in North Carolina are a travesty; not surprisingly, neither Vidant nor any other health care provider has been given the opportunity to partner with the State to address their concerns on the proposed changes to the State Health Plan.

I applaud Dr. Waldrum for taking a public stand against this initiative. We live in an age where hospital CEOs have to become activists to champion the health of those living in their service areas. It’s a new age in healthcare and health administration.
