The 2017 Society for Healthcare Strategy & Market Development (SHSMD) Connections event is taking place in Orlando in just a couple of weeks. This is one of the top healthcare marketing conferences of the year. I’ve been fortunate to serve as a speaker at 8 or 9 SHSMD conferences over the years, and to serve on SHSMD’s Digital Engagement Taskforce for the last three years. This year I was placed on the Digital Engagement Track Committee to help review proposals for the 2017 Conference. Needless to say, SHSMD is a big part of my career as a healthcare marketer and I am grateful to have access to its many resources.

The conference presents a great opportunity for learning, sharing and networking. Although I always expect to learn a great deal, I find that the networking has meant the most ot me over the years. I love connecting with friends, colleagues and peers from across the country. This might be the one time out of the year where we get to meet face-to-face. If you attend the conference, please come up and say hello to me. I welcome it!

I’ll be presenting once again at this year’s conference. It doesn’t happen every year, so I don’t ever take it for granted. I’m presenting with clients from the North Carolina Hospital Association (Julie Henry) and the New Hampshire Hospital Association (Vanessa Stafford). Our topic is advocacy marketing – something very important in today’s contentious healthcare environment. Advocacy can cover a range of issues including ACA Repeal, Medicaid Expansion, the Opiod epidemic and Behavioral Health, Certicifates of Needs, and more. The NHHA and the NCHA have used an interesting array of strategies and tactics to assert their agendas with key constituents. Some of the tools they’ve used include social media, digital media, infographics and memes. I’m confident that you will really enjoy hearing from Julie and Vanessa. They’ve got great stories to tell, and come very different states – politically, socially and economically.

I hope to see you at SHSMD 2017!
