2009 Came Roaring in Today

It’s Monday. My first day back in the office after the holidays. And let me tell you, 2009 is taking off like a rocket! Here’s what my first day back in the office looked like:

  • I started out by editing and then submitting an article that I’ve co-authored with Brooke Hynes of Tufts Medical Center for publication in the newsletter of the New England Society for Healthcare Communications (NESHCo). The piece in on the subject of hand hygiene campaigns and is based on the success of the Tufts Medical Center campaign.
  • Then I reviewed an article I just got back from an editor at the American Marketing Association (AMA) for publication in their Marketing Health Services magazine. My article is based on the presentation I gave at this year’s SHSMD conference on “marketing your marketing.” The basic premise is that marketers in hospitals and medical centers need to spend more time promoting their good work internally – to internal stakeholders.
  • Next I turned my attention to my presentation for the 14th National Forum on Customer Based Marketing Strategies. The conference is being held on February 4-6, 2009 in Las Vegas. The completed presentations needed to be submitted today. I am presenting with Mark Shelley, the director of marketing and advertising at Lexington Medical Center, on the subject of green marketing in healthcare and the healthy hospital movement.
  • I worked briefly with a hospital client to promote a breakthrough procedure they just performed and that media outlets are lining up to cover, but with a patient unwilling to tell her story publicly. These things happen.
  • I also booked my air and hotel accommodations for the Forum conference. You can get some amazing deals right now on airfare and hotel rooms! This is going to be a bargain basement trip to Las Vegas.
  • Finally, I did my expense report for December and turned it in for reimbursement. I don’t know why (it is stupid, I know) but I always drag my feet on doing my expense report.

I can already tell that this is going to be an amazing year. There’s so much activity and it’s only January 5th. It is nice to go into a new year with a full head of steam. My goals is to not let up, and to buck the economic trends. Sure, the recession is very real, but I’ve decided not to participate!
