Each year my firm sponsors the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham, NC. Our PR staff runs the pressroom throughout the four days of the Festival. Our primary function is to connect journalists with filmmakers. As The Durham News describes it, “The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is one of the nation’s great annual cinematic events, a four-day extravaganza featuring more than 100 films, plus talks and panels by filmmakers and other events. The offerings, from filmmakers throughout the world, span a wider range of subjects and styles than you can imagine…” Over the next few days, hundreds of filmmakers and documentary fans will descend upon Durham to watch more than 100 films in six venues – all located within a city block of one another.

Yesterday was day one of the 2012 Festival. It was a clear, cool, crisp spring day in Durham (see photos below). For my team, this represents an opportunity to shift gears for a few days and be a part of something truly amazing. A couple of years ago I met Wavy Gravy at the festival, and introduced him to my daughter. Last year, Elmo was one of the stars of the Festival and I was able to capture him on video. I can’t wait to see what this year brings.

Each year my firm handles the PR for the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham, NC. This is an incredible four day event with filmmakers and journalists attending from all over the country and around the world. We manage the PR and staff the press room for all four days of the Festival. For me, this is a great diversion from business as usual.

Each year something memorable happens for me at the Festival. A couple years ago I got to meet Wavy Gravy, the legend from the 60s. I always have my Flip camera ready just in case!

This year’s highlight was meeting Elmo! You know, the little red star from Sesame Street. A documentary titled “Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey” was screening at the Festival. It told the story of Kevin Clash, Elmo’s puppeteer and voice, and how Kevin transformed Elmo into a star. The film was directed by Constance Marks with Philip Shane.

I managed to film Kevin Clash, Elmo and Constance with my Flip camera as they conducted an interview with the press. There are some fun moments in this little three minute video. Enjoy!

This week I’ve taken a few days away from blogging about healthcare marketing. Instead, I’ve been working on a labor of love. For the last several months, my company has been doing pro bono work for the 2009 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.  One of our company’s values is to give back to our community and to support the arts. The Full Frame Festival is taking place right now in historic downtown Durham, North Carolina. And it is amazing! I’ve been blogging from the Festival, interviewing Festival staff and filmmakers. If you haven’t heard of Full Frame, it is one of the leading documentary film festivals. And it is thriving despite the economy. People from all over the world have descended on Durham to celebrate documentary film.

I invite you to check out the blog I’ve created for the Festival at http://fullframefest2009.wordpress.com. Below is a quick interview with Sadie Tillery, the director of programming for the Festival. Enjoy!
